Everything for me is currently about my ‘path to 40’. I’m really into growing up, so the things that make me feel like a proper adult are kinda my thing. I accidentally stumbled into a new one. Let me say, while we have been traveling for a really long time, I am still new to the luxury travel best practices. Because that’s what they are – there’s just a best way to plan these trips. At the end of the day, if you’re going to go, make sure you get the most perks possible at every single opportunity. It makes the trip better.
Backstory if you’re new here, my husband Jarrell and I left Ohio to travel the world on a one-way flight in 2013 and have been traveling and living abroad ever since. In the beginning, we were exclusively travelers – backpackers to be exact. Our boutique travel company, Hosted By The Cooks, has taught me to love the art of being a tourist. Luxury hotels and resorts, guided tours, a curated itinerary. A true vacation and the perks that come with it.
In August 2025 we were in Tokyo, hosting our group trip at the ANA InterContinental for an extended stretch. When we looked at the math – the guaranteed upgrade alone on that booking – the $225 membership fee was an obvious yes. So we signed up.
What we didn’t fully anticipate was how much the membership would upgrade the overall hotel experience throughout the rest of our travels. Nine months later, here’s what that has actually looked like.

What Is the InterContinental Ambassador Program?
Before we get into our experience, here’s a quick breakdown for anyone who’s new to it.
The InterContinental Ambassador program is a paid membership – $225 per year – that gives you guaranteed elite benefits at InterContinental Hotels and Resorts worldwide. It has benefits like the IHG One Rewards program but works differently. You don’t earn your way in. You buy in for $225. And in exchange, you get a specific set of guaranteed perks every time you stay at an InterContinental property.
Here’s what the membership includes:
– Guaranteed one category room upgrade
– Guaranteed 4 PM late checkout
– Complimentary weekend night certificate (one per year – valid on the second night of a two-night paid weekend stay)
– Automatic IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite status
– Up to $20 restaurant and bar credit per stay
– Dedicated check-in area (Like a VIP Line)
– Single room rate for double occupancy
– Complimentary mineral water and internet
It’s also worth knowing that the Platinum Elite status you receive applies across the entire IHG portfolio – not just InterContinental. That means Kimpton, Indigo, Crowne Plaza, and more. So even when you’re not at an InterContinental property, you’re still traveling with status.

The Business Class Hotel Experience
This is how you upgrade the hotel experience.
And I love flying business class. I love the amenities – the elevated service from the moment they arrive at the airport, the VIP counter, lounge access, the lie-flat seat, better food, everything.
Typically, the only thing comparable at hotels is the loyalty program, which can only be earned with stays or points. The Ambassador program is the business class upgrade for a flat fee. You can upgrade your entire relationship with where you stay – at every InterContinental property, in every country, for a full twelve months for $225.
The guaranteed upgrade is your lie-flat seat. The 4 PM checkout is your lounge access on the other end. The dedicated check-in is the VIP line. And the complimentary weekend night certificate – which, used strategically at a property where weekend rates exceed $225, essentially pays for the membership on its own.
You don’t fly business class because they have to. You do it because you messed around and did it, and now it’s hard to go back to not being VIP. That’s exactly how we feel about this program.
The Properties We’ve Stayed At With the Program

ANA InterContinental Tokyo, Japan
This is where it started. The upgrade bumped us to a higher floor with a view. When we arrived, there was a welcome gift waiting in the room – a small but genuinely thoughtful touch that set the tone immediately.

Two InterContinental Properties, Bangkok, Thailand
Which property is best is a debate between me and Jarrell. We first stayed at InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit. I would call this the more boutique of the two. The upgrade got us a larger room with a view and our status got us free breakfast.
On our next visit to Bangkok, we accidentally booked the second property, Intercontinental Bangkok. Wow! Boutique would never come to mind to describe it. The hotel is massive. We had chocolate gifts waiting in the upgraded room, and a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine. The breakfast buffet was complimentary with our status and it was endless.

InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The upgrade here moved us into a suite with club access – which meant a dedicated lounge, unlimited soft drinks, and daily cocktails. And we used the guaranteed 4 PM checkout time to make a late night flight much more convenient.

Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, Laos
This is where the membership surprised us most. The Ambassador program and the Platinum Elite status that comes with it work across the IHG network, not just at InterContinental hotels. The InterContinental brand has a certain ring to it. Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza don’t carry the same weight on paper – but both properties in Vientiane, Laos were the top hotels in the city, and we were genuinely impressed.

The Holiday Inn in particular was a very new property with impeccable facilities. Our automatic upgrade put us in a suite with a washer and dryer – something that sounds small until you’re traveling long-term and it becomes one of the most practical luxuries imaginable.
Even when the property name is different, the standard and guaranteed upgrades travel with you. That consistency across countries and brand tiers is genuinely rare.
Is It Worth Renewing?
Yes. Without hesitation.
In nine months we have stayed at five properties across three countries. The guaranteed upgrade has delivered every single time. We’ve had suite upgrades, higher floors, club access, and a room with a washer and dryer in Laos that was genuinely one of the most practical gifts a long-term traveler could ask for. We’ve had welcome gifts and warm service and breakfasts that I’m still occasionally thinking about.
The $225 fee paid for itself in Tokyo before we even left the city.
Everything since has been the icing.
If you stay at an InterContinental or any IHG property even once or twice a year – the Ambassador program is worth it. The consistency across countries and brand tiers is the kind of grown-up reliability that, once you have it, you won’t want to travel without.
